Dean testifies Nixon may not have realized Watergate implications

Former White House counsel John W. Dean III told the Senate Watergate hearings he informed President Nixon of efforts to keep the scandal out of the White House three months after the break in. He said Nixon may have known but did not realize the implications, and described a White House culture of fear and an appetite for political intelligence.

Two Boys Admit Setting Fire in Rolling Hills Blaze

Two boys aged 12 and 13 admitted Sunday that homemade fireworks started the Rolling Hills fire on Palos Verdes Peninsula. The blaze destroyed 11 luxury homes and damaged 12 others, forcing hundreds to flee while three workers risked their lives to save homes, lying on a roof and spraying water as flames surged. Also reported, two prison inmates escaped from the Federal Correctional Institution during the same period, with guards firing on them as they climbed two fences.

Lompoc Flower Festival 21st Annual Highlights and Winners

The 21st Lompoc Flower Festival featured parades on Ryan Park and H Street with the Reseda Youth Band Drill Team and a moon buggy. Elks won the float sweepstakes for Lewis and Clark, while Mexican Social Organizations claimed best theme for a California Missions Padre Serra float. Prizes and meals supported Meals on Wheels and 4-H, with art by J.K. Cota and Kathy Capshaw. Dot White won $1,000 in the Shower of Prizes. other winners took a color TV, stereo, and a 10 speed bike. Cmdr. Charles Southwick called the event grand. turnout for the King Concert was weak but overall the festival was excellent.

Summit Talks Seen as Peaceful Milestone

President Nixon and Leonid Brezhnev hailed their summit as a step toward lasting U S Soviet peace. They issued a 17 page communique calling for talks on troop withdrawals from Europe on Oct 30 and targeting 2 to 3 billion dollars in trade over three years.

Lompoc Unified trustees to reserve action on future salary raises

Trustees meet at 3:30 p.m. at district headquarters 1301 North A St to reserve right to increase salaries later if funds allow. Classified staff and teachers have faced pay rises, with a 5.5 percent hike granted to classified employees and a similar offer rejected by teachers pending negotiations. Also on the agenda is the district budget, notice of field restroom completions at two high schools.
