Grass fire roars through Rolling Hills destroys homes

A fast moving grass fire in the Rolling Hills area burned or damaged about a dozen upscale homes across 200 acres. Firefighters struggled against 20 mph winds with four water dropping helicopters, as a wedding at Wayfarers Chapel was interrupted and the church avoided damage.

Senate rejects McGovern plan to shape Phase IV controls

The Senate 49 to 27 rejected Sen. George S. McGovern's proposal to require a congressional role in Phase IV economic controls after the price freeze ends. McGovern would have forced Nixon to notify Congress 15 days before Phase IV and allow Congress to modify the program if unsatisfied. Kennedy proposed next week to freeze rents at current levels for the duration of the price freeze, joining ongoing debates alongside Social Security adjustments.

Haskell Co. Low Bid On Lompoc Freeway Project

Bids opened in Sacramento for a four lane bypass of Lompoc on State Highway 1 from south of Route 246 to north of the Santa Ynez River. Haskell Company of Watsonville bid $8.23 million, $311 thousand under Yeager Constructors.

Lompoc Flower Festival Parade Opens 21st Run

The annual Flower Festival parade begins at 10 a.m. at the Lompoc Shopping Center and winds to Ryan Park with 250 plus entries. Grand marshal Cmdr. Charles Everett Southwick and queen Jean Mayer lead alongside Mayor E. C. Stevens and Sen. Robert Lagomarsino. Skydivers, 10 floral floats, bands, drill teams, equestrian entries, and over 1,000,000 blooms decorate floats later on display at Ryan Park.

Skylab crew returns after record spaceflight splashdown

The Skylab 4 crew led by Commander Charles Conrad lands aboard the USS Ticonderoga off California after a 49 day 11.5 million mile mission. Kerwin Weitz and Conrad make first outside repair and plan a Nixon White House visit if conditions allow. They are greeted by the Tico crew as medical checks and media follow the historic recovery.

Kickback charges tied to 1972 convention booth scheme

Walter L. Scott disclosed to UPI that he offered to sell 360 booths for 5 000 each at the 1972 Republican and Democratic conventions, sharing 1 million with each party and 400 000 to himself, as part of a plan to bypass campaign finance laws. The venture was abandoned after ITT rumors and possible adverse publicity emerged. The Senate Watergate Committee planned a closed session before John Dean III testifies, aiming to decide on whether former Attorney General John N. Mitchell must testify publicly.

Nixon Brezhnev Summit Ends With Pact And California Flight

President Nixon and Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev concluded eight days of talks with a White House ceremony pledging to avoid nuclear war and speed limits on arms. They then flew to San Clemente California to continue discussions at Nixon's bluff top villa.
