Long lineup for 19th Flower Festival Parade

The parade features numerous floats and groups including Equestrian acts, bands, drill teams, and novelty entries from Lompoc, Santa Maria, Reseda, El Paso, Santa Ynez, and other communities. Notable participants include the USS Los Angeles tribute, Lompoc Shrine Knights Templar division, Royal Cavaliers bands and royal Cavaliers majorette corps, Elks Lodge civic float, and Kiwanis Klowns.

Man slain may have plotted Nixon assassination

UPI reports Secret Service weighing if James E Beavers of Squire West Virginia who opposed Nixon Southeast Asia policy came to Chicago for an attack on the president. Beavers was killed in a Grant Park shootout about three hours before Nixon’s Meigs Field visit. He carried two 32 caliber revolvers. sister says he was violent and distrusted Nixon policies and had phoned the White House previously. She said he left West Virginia Monday and mentioned Florida or California. Nixon owns homes in Key Biscayne Florida and San Clemente California.
