Supreme Court Sets New Obscenity Guidelines and Desegregation Ruling

The Supreme Court split 5 to 4 to set new obscenity guidelines allowing local bans on books films and plays while removing redeeming social importance as a defense. The decision lets juries apply local standards over national ones and mandates desegregation across a Northern city school system. It also ruled 5 to 4 that newspapers may be barred from help-wanted ads showing gender preference.

Pilots shoot down own jet fighter near Point Mugu

Two civilian test pilots in a Grumman F14 Tomcat crashed into the Pacific 70 miles southwest of Naval Air Station Point Mugu after a Sparrow missile fired from the jet struck the aircraft. The pilots parachuted safely and were rescued by a Navy helicopter. The Navy froze Sparrow missile firings from F14s pending investigation. This marks the third F14 crash since December 1970.

California passes sunshine act to extend daylight saving time

Assembly approves a bill to shift clocks forward two hours in June to September and keep one hour in May and October. The measure cites reduced crime and traffic from more daylight and lower electric use, while a GOP critic warns of bedtime disruption for children.

Senators Press Budget Vote Without Seeing It

A holdout member of California s budget committee warns senators to vote before viewing the bill. Senator Walter Stiern opposes using 215 million in federal revenue sharing for tax rebates and favors directing funds to welfare and social programs. Sen. In Sacramento a state bill would force governors assembly members and local officials to disclose investments over 1000 and income gifts and loans over 250 yearly. Senator George Moscone praised the 9 to 2 Governmental Organization Committee vote.
