Wood Wins Key California Assembly Seat for GOP
Republican Robert G. Wood defeated Democrat Fred S. Farr 26 274 to 19 651 to give the GOP a 41 39 majority in the California Assembly. Wood, a Greenfield apricot grower, said he will vote his own mind and not be a rubber stamp. Farr, a former state senator, had resigned as federal highway beautification coordinator to run. The vacancy was created when Alan Pattee died in an auto crash.

Bettencourt to retain office despite change in post
Bettencourt, longtime secretary of the Santa Ynez River Water Conservation District, Improvement District 1, will remain on the job at the parent district though he resigned from the subsidiary post.
