Lompoc Unified School District expects about 12 percent turnover from a 600 teacher staff, down from the usual 14 to 18 percent. About 66 resignations so far and more on leave are planned before June 30, with 50 new hires already signed and 27 vacancies mainly in junior and senior high schools.
UPI reports heavy fighting in Tay Ninh South Vietnam as government forces and U.S. 25th Infantry Division reinforcements clash with North Vietnamese troops who have seized areas on the city’s eastern northern and western edges. The 150000-person city lies about 50 miles northwest of Saigon near Cambodia. Civilians face repeated shelling as forces engage across the border and within the city.
The United States and Spain expect to sign a two year renewal allowing continued use of US bases in Spain in return for 50 million dollars in military equipment to Madrid. The pact was worked out by Spanish officials and U S official U Alexis Johnson. The report notes the two sides aim to finalize by week’s end.
The United Farm Workers Organization Committee warns the grape strike may spread to other agricultural segments in California. LeRoy Chatfield criticizes Allen Grant, state Board of Agriculture chairman, for a pro-grower stance while noting growing union interest among workers in other sectors.
Israeli officials say the death of American tourist Shirley L. Anderson near the Dead Sea prompted heavy air strikes by twin engines and fighters along the Jordan River. They report eight Arab guerrillas killed in two firefights and two major truce violations with no Israeli losses.
New York air traffic was halved as controllers at Kennedy LaGuardia and Newark called in sick amid a slowdown over pay and safety concerns. Only 12 inbound and 12 outbound flights per hour were allowed, far below the normal 60 to 70 per hour, with delays reported nationwide.
WASHINGTON UPI. W Averill Harriman and two Senate Democratic leaders Mike Mansfield and Edward Kennedy endorsed Clark M Clifford's plan to withdraw 100000 U.S. combat troops from Vietnam this year with another 100000 to 150000 by 1970. Harriman urged an immediate 50000 pullout and end to search and destroy missions. Clifford's proposal followed in Foreign Affairs.
A Senate subcommittee reached a compromise on President Nixon's Safeguard antimissile request. It would build two ABM sites in North Dakota and Montana designed as research and development facilities with radars and computers, awaiting full committee vote.
In Chicago the national SDS convention tightens security with undercover police and restricted media access after two bomb threats. Delegates, including Michael Klonsky, confront internal clashes over leadership and tactics as 1,500 delegates register amid lengthy lines. Dohrn notes new press limits while factions from Revolutionary Youth Movement and Progressive Labor vie for influence.
Veteran county officials lose jobs in recent months with Homer Underwood resigning as refuse department head and County Personnel Officer Robert Smith fired. Public Works inherits refuse duties and Elevectorski’s previous water agency role. Smith seeks public appeal hearing with attorney Ardy Barton assisting.
