Ban on DDT may raise prices for farm products
California agricultural officials warn the federal DDT ban, taking effect December 31, will push up costs for farm goods especially citrus. Substitutes exist for many crops but not yet for citrus, alfalfa seed, peppers and onions, raising fears of higher consumer prices. In Fresno County, seed alfalfa faces the biggest impact as substitutes are near completion. The University of California and state ag officials note substitutes are more toxic and require more applications.
