Tartuffe shines in modern Pacific Conservatory production

The Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts opens Tartuffe at Allan Hancock College with strong casting and Richard Wilbur's contemporary translation. Gordon Peacock directs a credible 17th century France satire, highlighting hypocrisy as timeless. Tartuffe runs nightly in repertory through Sept. 2 with box office 922 8313.

LAFCO rejects bid for two extra members

The Local Agency Formation Commission turned down a bid by the County Special Districts Assn. for two additional representatives on the five member body in a 4-0 vote. Critics argued extra district votes would shift independence and persistently advocate district interests.

Armenian Immigrant Sentenced to Life in Santa Barbara Slayings

Gourgen Yanikian 78, of Santa Barbara, received two concurrent life terms for the January murder of two Turkish diplomats. He was moved Thursday from county jail to Vacaville reception center to serve the sentence. Attorney James T. Lindsey said an appeal to the appellate court is planned after Judge Westwick denied a new trial and probation. Sheriff John W. Carpenter noted the transfer by a special unit. Westwick had delayed commitment pending translation of a 14 page document Yanikian wrote for the Probation Department.

Waters Unearned Benefits and Guard Veterans Clash

The article denounces California national guardsmen seeking veteran home loan benefits to which they have not earned. It traces past attempts to broaden eligibility via AB 2426, arguing the six year service rule would cloak nonveterans as veterans.
