Jordan says guerrilla bases wiped out in Jordan

Jordan reports its army has virtually destroyed Palestinian guerrilla bases, with 2,300 guerrillas arrested over five days of fighting. Guerrillas fled to the West Bank and some surrendered to Israeli authorities. Iraq closed its border and ordered the Jordanian ambassador to leave.

Mandatory vaccination fights sleeping sickness on Gulf Coast

Animal health experts ordered mandatory horse vaccinations across Texas Oklahoma New Mexico Arkansas Louisiana and planned aerial insecticide spraying to curb a sleeping sickness outbreak that has killed 820 Texas horses and infected 1 070. Quarantines on horse movement are in effect and vaccination targets exceed 90 percent.

County Fair Opens with Maid Contest Finalists

Santa Barbara County fair opens in Santa Maria with the Maid of Santa Barbara County finalists led by Flower Festival Queen Robin Densmore and nine other contestants. An estimated 70,000 paying visitors are expected over the six day event at the Santa Maria Fairgrounds.

General Plan Committee to hear Village master plan amend

The General Plan Committee for Lompoc Valley meets tonight at 7 30 in the Veterans Memorial Building dining room. Gaylen Jackson says the session will feature presentations from the County Planning Department staff and the Development Company about amending the master plan. No public testimony is planned. A re study of the Village master plan follows a controversial Constellation Road and Burton Mesa condo plan and was ordered after a board of supervisors delay. The commission asked for a local committee study and recommendations. A second meeting will follow to firm up details.

Phu Loi Base Hit Again by 107mm Rockets

UPI reports Communist rockets struck the Phu Loi base 13 miles north of Saigon injuring one American and three insurgents. The attack occurred as Nixon’s troop withdrawal plan neared its halfway mark with 233,300 U.S. servicemen in Vietnam. Air and ground forces targeted North Vietnamese rocket sites near the A Shau Valley and Fuller DMZ outpost, which has been rebuilt after prior bombardments.

Postal unions near first labor contract with new US Postal Service

Negotiators for the postal unions and the new US Postal Service neared a contract after a marathon session extending beyond 24 hours. Progress reported on regionals to end a four day old telephone strike, while talks to halt a UTU strike against Southern Railway and Union Pacific faced a snag.
