Apollo 15 countdown begins to Cape Kennedy

The countdown started today for Apollo 15 with David R. Scott Alfred Worden and James Irwin set for a 9 34 a m Monday launch. Scott and Irwin plan a 67 hour stay on the moon with Worden to set a six day lunar orbit endurance record.

Budget study to continue tonight in Lompoc council

The Lompoc City Council plans to extend its 1971-72 preliminary budget review at tonight’s regular meeting in City Hall. Total operating costs are shown at about 2.8 million dollars with 1,976,590 to be raised for the general fund. The session includes a weed abatement cost report, hearings on several ordinances, and amendments to the Environmental Quality Committee and two reviewing boards.

Postal and telephone settlements near $5 billion in wages

Tentative contracts total about 5 billion dollars for 1.25 million postal and Bell System workers. The Bell plan covers 4 billion over three years with job security provisions. Postal workers seek a two year 1 billion package with wage boosts and benefits.

Residents clash over Vandenberg Village plan at county meeting

At a Veterans Memorial Building session, residents charged rights were violated by a proposed five and a half acre condominium by Vandenberg Village Development Co. SAMTEC to get new commander

Brigadier General Jessup D. Lowe will assume command of the Space and Missile Test Center SAMTEC in mid August. He comes from the Arnold Engineering Development Center and has held key posts in missile and space systems. His decorations include the Legion of Merit and Distinguished Flying Cross.

North Vietnamese rocket strikes end 20 day lull

News from Saigon reports North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces ended a 20 day lull with rocket and mortar attacks along the DMZ. Allied commanders see the push as signaling a new offensive phase, while others attribute it to the dark moon and July weather. Casualties include 102 enemy killed in major clashes across five northern provinces of South Vietnam.

Board weighs staff size over commission cuts in planning dept

The Board of Supervisors shifted from trimming the nine member planning commission to a study of possible overstaffing in the planning department.
