Monagan aide admits secret donations to third party
Jerry Simpson, once top aide to Assembly Republican leader Robert T. Monagan, says it was his idea to fund Peace and Freedom party candidates to siphon votes from Democrats. Frank DeLong disclosed that he secretly gave 700 to 800 dollars to Peace and Freedom candidates last year, with Secretary of State Edmund Brown Jr. probing potential reporting violations. DeLong cashed checks and distributed cash and money orders to hide GOP involvement. Simpson could not recall the exact funding purpose but said he would have approved the idea. DeLong faced a weeklong gag before speaking to reporters about the affair.
