President Nixon remained at Bethesda Naval Hospital after being diagnosed with viral pneumonia following chest pains and a restless night. Doctors reported a temperature around 101 to 102 degrees, limited work activity, and a expectation of recovery within about a week, with no complications noted.

Revegetation Under Way at J-M Tailings Near Cabrillo

Johns Manville tailings near the Cabrillo Scenic Highway are being revegetated after four years of inactivity. County planning staff say a separate quarry operation by Dibblee Poett and Henry Antolini, visible from the highway, is illegal and must terminate.

Mayor Stevens Stella Reed win top chamber awards

Lompoc Mayor E C Stevens and Mrs Stella Reed were named Man of the Year and Woman of the Year by the Lompoc Valley Chamber of Commerce at the annual awards banquet. Stevens, ex Lompoc Record editor and now Allan Hancock College community affairs director, was honored for community service including space shuttle activity and city improvement efforts. Reed was cited for work with the Chamber Women’s Division Quota Club Historical Society and other groups.

Water Board issues order on Lake Cachuma use

The Water Resources Control Board issued a long awaited order governing Lake Cachuma operations and rejected a bid by South Coast entities to join future modifications. Santa Ynez River district leader William Laranjo announced unanimous board action on July 5.
