Senate Rejects Delay on Trans Alaska Pipeline Study Plan

The Senate voted 61 to 29 to reject a Mondale Bayh amendment proposing an eight month study of a Canadian routing for a 789 mile Alaska pipeline and to back a straight right of way for the project. The body also defeated Eagleton on a similar study motion while approving Buckley funding for Alaskan native programs from expected North Slope revenues.

B52 Pullout Begins in Southeast Asia

The Pentagon announces a limited initial B52 withdrawal from Southeast Asia ahead of the August 15 deadline to end U.S. participation in Indochina. Current plans call for about 15 planes removed, with administration sources predicting possible cuts of roughly half of the 200 plus B52s stationed there. Cambodia bombing activity is expected to continue at about 40 strikes daily.

Moore cites Nixon innocence on Watergate linkage

Richard A. Moore, a Nixon adviser, testifies he believed Nixon knew nothing about the Watergate scandal until spring. He says Nixon’s first full briefing on the bugging and coverup came after John Dean informed him on March 21. Moore recalls reading daily press reports in 1972 and questions whether anyone close to the President should have acted sooner.

Commission Deliberates Case of Two Sheriff Deputies

The County Civil Service Commission began deliberations after testimony in the appeal hearing of deputies Joseph Ristagno and Bobby Bailey who were fired March 9 for alleged sexual relations with women while on duty. Women witnesses invoked the Fifth Amendment. Rumors of grand jury probes into officers with passengers in patrol cars circulated, but no disclosures were made. Undersheriff Larry Marshall said no known investigations were underway.

Weather and Personnel Notes Before Island Vista Promotions

Night and morning low clouds give way to mostly fair weather through Sunday with warmer coastal conditions. Tides forecast high 3.9 at 11 49 am and 6 feet 10 36 pm, low minus 0.5 at 5 19 am and 2.3 at 4 23 pm. Monday shows high 4 feet at 12 18 pm and low minus 0.5 at 9 45 am and 2 feet at 1 pm. Two inspector positions to be filled this year. Capt Joel Honey, once fired over Isla Vista riot enforcement and later reinstated, failed the test. Honey was reassigned to civil affairs after reinstatement by the commission. Two other captains and three lieutenants also say exams discriminated and had improper questions. Capt Fritz Patterson, who followed Honey as Isla Vista field commander, passed his inspector exam.

Mafia front man testifies of bribing revenue agents

Gerald M. Zelmanowitz a former front man for Mafia leaders testified before a Senate subcommittee under immunity. He named financial firms and officials involved in an international stolen securities racket and said bribed IRS agents and bank officials helped funnel Mafia money and avoid an 18 percent Interest Equalization Tax using forged forms.

Nixon Resting Easier Amid Pneumonia Onset

President Nixon rests in Navy Hospital Bethesda with viral pneumonia causing chest pain but doctors report no spread signs and say he is moderately ill. They cannot identify the virus type and expect at least a week before discharge as he receives antibiotics and breathing therapy. His wife visits and staff monitor his condition.

Argentina moves toward new elections as President Campora resigns clearing Juan Peron to reassume leadership. Raul Lastiri becomes provisional president and must call elections within 30 days while Diaz Bialet departs for Europe.
