Mitchell ties Haldeman Ehrlichman to hiding Watergate truth

John N. Mitchell testified to the Senate Watergate Committee that H. Haldeman and John D. Ehrlichman joined in an active effort to keep the truth about Watergate and related crimes from President Nixon. He said discussions with the two in 1972 touched on how to keep lid on disclosures, while they denied knowledge of the affair until spring.

Controversy grows over Santa Barbara County general plan hearing

The Santa Barbara County Planning Commission held a marathon five hour session in Lompoc drawing about 150 people as it reviews the general plan. Debate centered on zoning for a 75 acre parcel on Rucker Road and a 2,500 acre area around Vandenberg Village with environmentalists opposing changes. Additional talks covered industrial zoning and a proposed 1,000 acre ranch development north of Lompoc Casmalia Road and east of Mission Hills. The next hearing is set for July 18 in Lompoc.

PCPA Opens Ninth Season With The Music Man At Hancock

Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts kicks off its ninth season at Allan Hancock College with The Music Man a high spirited musical. Dame Judith Anderson attends as special guest along with donors and officials. Argentine pilot hailed as hero after Varig crash near Paris

A Varig Boeing 707 bound from Brazil crash landed near Orly, saving many by steering clear of homes. The fire killed 122, mostly from smoke and flames, with 12 survivors all crew members. Pilot Gilberto Araujo Da Silva is praised as calm and nerveless for the fatal landing.

Supervisors may seek bids for new Lompoc airport operator

The Board of Supervisors may soon ask for proposals to name a new fixed base operator at Lompoc County Airport after the county took over operations from Lompoc Flying Service which defaulted on its agreement. Proposals will be judged on financials qualifications and applicant history amid IRS seizure concerns and ongoing audits with possible litigation.

Fire destroys military personnel records in St. Louis blaze

A fire at the U S Military Personnel Records Center in Overland near St. Louis burned for hours destroying hundreds of thousands of records dating back to World War I and II. FBI agents assisted as fire crews fought the blaze on the top floor of the six story building housing 56 million personnel files.

Five die in Santa Barbara Channel crash identified

Authorities named five victims of a Channel crash including three New York men and a New York City detective. Pilot H Ray Jones, 47, of Port Washington attempted an instrument approach in heavy fog before the crash. Passengers included John W Crocell, detective.
