In Lubbock 300 were arrested for obstructing fire crews during grass fires, injuring at least three including a officer. Davenport saw 15 arrests at a damp rock festival with 5,000 attendees. Queen Elizabeth II sent congratulations, Charlie Smith celebrated his 131st birthday in Florida, Milwaukee held a grand Circus Parade, and Ziggy the elephant was freed after a 30 year chain hold at Brookfield Zoo.

Britons Rescued After 117 Days Adrift in Pacific
Mr and Mrs Michael Bailey of Southampton were rescued June 30 by the Korean fishing boat Wolmi off Guatemala’s west coast. They had been adrift since March 4 after their eight ton yacht Auralyn sank 400 miles off Acapulco while en route to New Zealand. They suffer from severe malnutrition and exhaustion.

One Horse Fire Contained in California After Five Days
Mountain blaze near One Horse Springs in the Morongo Reservation was declared contained after a five day battle. Fire crews still battle hot spots inside the perimeter with potential burning for weeks. The fire burned over 10 000 acres, destroyed timber, and cost about 1 million dollars. An army of 1 500 firefighters used 12 helicopters to access rugged canyons in Mt. San Jacinto Wilderness as climber firefighters are sought.

Dying wish fulfilled Harry Oliver dies on July Fourth
Woodland Hills California from UPI Harry Oliver an Oscar winner and art director for early films died at 85 from a heart condition at the Motion Picture Country House and Hospital. He had told doctors he wished to die on the Fourth of July and that is how he passed away. Oliver won two Academy Awards and was known as commander of Ft Oliver and editor printer janitor of the Desert Rat Scrapbook with a 30000 circulation. Born in Hastings Minnesota he quit school in the fourth grade saying he was a lousy speller.

Kissinger to travel to Peking again next month
