Hijacked Argentine jet with hostages lands in Cuba

A Boeing 737 carrying 80 aboard was seized by guerrilla hijackers en route to Jujuy. The flight carried 7 million pesos and $700,000 in cash escorted by bank officials as it landed in Cuba with 26 hostages. It was unclear if the money or officers remained aboard.

Immunity granted for Senate testimony in Watergate case

UPI reports District Judge Sirica issued limited immunity to David R. Young allowing his testimony before the Senate Watergate Committee. Young, former co-director of the White House Plumbers Unit, sought protection from perjury charges stemming from his Senate evidence. The committee resumes hearings Tuesday.

Two Women Sunbathe as Fireworks Echo Moon Dirt

Glimpses show two women spreading a blanket on a Yellow Cab and sunbathing while four year old Michael Johnson jokes that last night's aerial fireworks from Huyck Stadium made the moon dirty. Forecast remains warm with fog patches at night and morning. Coastal highs in the 60s and inland 80s to low 90s, with tonight's lows in the 50s. Northwest winds 10 to 15 mph, tides Friday high 3.9 ft at 3 05 am and 5 ft at 4 22 pm, low tides 0.9 ft at 9 24 am and 1.6 ft at 11 02 pm.

Dollar Weakness Prompts French Action On Currencies

In London the dollar slipped with reports of UN discussions on shifting away from the dollar. France raised interest rates and imposed controls to fight inflation and stabilise exchange rates. President Pompidou warned of a looming crisis, and Giscard d Estaing said fixed rates are essential as monetary volatility worsens. Master plan study targets county seaside parks

A county master-plan study will evaluate three parks Jalama Beach Ocean Beach and Waller Park with planners Livingston and Blaney to draft a recreation element for revised general plan. Gas main explodes ripping street in Long Beach

A gas main explosion in Long Beach California tore a 40 foot trench in the street and blasted a two story apartment building. Two burned one seriously and two injured jumping from a second floor window. Firemen fought a two hour blaze as a passerby and witness described a wall of fire engulfing the building. Police say a passing car may have ignited fumes from the leak.

Traffic Deaths Near 170 Mark During July Fourth Holiday

Traffic fatalities rose above the 100 mark as the Fourth of July holiday ended with at least 169 deaths since Tuesday morning. Ohio led with 22 deaths, followed by California with 12, amid generally good travel conditions despite storms in the Midwest and heavy rain in Vermont and New Hampshire.
