Reagan signs record California budget trimming eighty million

California's $9.38 billion budget, the largest in the nation, was signed by Gov. Ronald Reagan after trimming eighty million. The measure includes big pay hikes for state workers, park funding, a new Capitol building, and the largest school aid boost in state history. Senate leader George Moscone condemned the move as hypocritical and urged deeper cuts, arguing the tax ceiling plan would have reduced the budget by about three billion dollars.

Jury finds Dr. Moglen innocent of charges

A Santa Maria Municipal Court jury returned a not guilty verdict for psychiatrist Dr. Lloyd Moglen 34 accused of obscene telephone calls to a 15 year old girl. The eight woman four man panel deliberated under two hours before the ruling in Judge Jon Gudmunds court.

Californians pay an extra 1.7 million daily as a 6 percent sales tax takes effect amid a 829 million dollar state surplus. Gov. Yanikian Found Guilty of Murder in Santa Barbara

Gourgen Yanikian, 78, Armenian immigrant, convicted of first degree murder on two counts for the January 27 slaying of Turkish diplomats at the Santa Barbara Biltmore Hotel. Judge Westwick set a July 20 date for probation report. verdict prompted Yanikian to denounce it in a court ante room. Coast Guard investigations also reported the sinking of the Teddy Bear off Santa Barbara with survivors rescued by Pt. Judith and another vessel.

Eclipse Study Declared A Success In Kenya Field

Foreign scientists, using advanced equipment, called the solar eclipse study a solid success at Loiyangalani Kenya with observers from Boulder Colorado noting capture of the event. Villagers feared famine or apocalypse and barricaded huts as a seven minute four second eclipse occurred. A parallel gathering occurred in Chinguetti Mauritania while mosques in Nouakchott urged prayers during the darkening sky.

California brush blaze roars up San Jacinto Mountains

The largest California fire of the year swelled beyond 8,000 acres as 1,200 firefighters battled flames on steep timbered slopes. Fire started on the Morongo Indian Reservation and officials investigated reports three young boys were seen near the origin. Crews used helicopters and rope ascents to access cliffs, with winds driving the blaze and helicopters delivering hundreds of firefighters into the rugged area.
