White House distances Deans hush money testimony

The White House says Nixon told Dean on March 21 that a one million dollar hush payment was blackmail and wrong and would not work. Senate aides noted conflicting accounts from J. Fred Buzhardt about Dean's March 21 testimony while Dean maintained Nixon called the payment no problem and discussed clemency with top aides. Dean finished five days of testimony before a July 10 Mitchell appearance. the session included related mentions of tax audits pressure and Rosemary Wood calls.

Ehrlichman says he learned of Watergate cover-up late March

Former White House aide John Ehrlichman told CBS 60 Minutes he began to know about the Watergate cover-up around the end of last March. He said Nixon aides helped oversee the White House investigation and questioned whether Mitchell would be the fall guy.

County tax rate cut possible after big assessed value rise

County assessor William H. Cook announced a 34.3 million dollar increase in the secured roll for 1973 74 aided by heavy new construction. Officials say the boost could offset a lower tax rate and possibly trim the 3 46 levy by about 20 cents or more.

Reagan to veto tax delay bill and propose rebates

California lawmakers pass a bill delaying a penny sales tax hike to January and delivering a 325 million income tax cut next April. Governor Reagan rejects the measure and offers a six month delay plus 20 to 35 percent income tax rebates, citing caps on rebate amounts.

House rejects Social Security benefit hike amid debt fight

The House voted 190 to 185 against applying a 5.6 percent Social Security increase for about 30 million elderly, while pressuring conferees to renegotiate the debt ceiling with the Senate. White House adviser Melvin Laird warned of a veto if financing the rise is not addressed, as Republicans argued the plan would cost over $500 million in FY 1974.

Congress settles on August 15 bombing withdrawal date

Congress and President Nixon reach a compromise ending US involvement in Indochina by August 15 1973. The plan bars further funding for Cambodian air strikes after that date unless new approval is given. The agreement completes passage of a 3.3 billion supplemental bill replacing Nixon vetoed Cambodia ban.

Colson and Haldeman dispute over Watergate meeting details

Colson testified under oath that Haldeman knew Dean attended earlier meetings with Mitchell about Watergate plans. He said he was shocked to learn of Dean's attendance and that Haldeman confirmed Dean had told him. Haldeman's deposition contrasted with Colson's account.

County DA plans upgrade for consumer fraud unit

Johnson seeks county grant to fund a two year consumer fraud project in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties. First year cost 21273 with Santa Barbara to be charged 7948. Federal 12300 state 25 cents. The plan aims to expand protection and address inadequate handling of complaints. In 1972 SB unit logged 439 complaints with 33 suits filed. Jan–May this year 23 of 179 filed due to small staff.

Controversial annexation returns to Lompoc council

Lompoc City Council will weigh an ordinance prezoning 80 acres for a mobile home park. Environmentalists oppose the plan while an attorney will address the annexation, and an environmental impact statement on sewer service will be reviewed.
