Floods and flood debris sweep through Lompoc Valley area

Down Floradale Avenue and near Artesia Avenue floodwaters trap property and vehicles. Debris lanes form as erosion undercuts roads and a farm structure is displaced. The Santa Ynez River floods force evacuations, rescue operations, and Red Cross relief while residents report varying damage and authorities tally livestock losses.

Flood Disaster Slams Santa Ynez Valley Damages Hit Millions

The flood battered South Vandenberg and surrounding valleys with damage running into millions. Br idges at Surf and FCI, plus the Southern Pacific spur, were destroyed or jeopardized. Agriculture suffered about 1 million in losses with 2000 acres damaged in Lompoc and 500 acres severely ruined. NASA Vandenberg faced about 2 million in base restoration costs, and traffic rerouted through Lompoc as floodwaters rose.

Flood Devastates Artesia Avenue Homes and Farms

Lower valley families recount a rapid inundation that left Ernest Bondietti and Joe Dominguez with ruined homes and few salvaged belongings. Flood waters reached four feet in Bondietti’s yard and remained six inches in Dominguez’s, destroying six sheds and several farm machines. Neighbors helped Sunday as residents faced uninsured losses and uncertain recovery.

Police say a chain saw was stolen from Arthur Careyette’s car on North H Street near the Lompoc Drive-in Theater Saturday night. Careyette found the tool missing after returning to the vehicle. The Lomoc Municipal Swimming Pool remains closed pending water conservation measures tied to flood damage at the city’s sewage treatment plant.
