Vault records fall to Smith and Feuerbach at Sunkist

Steve Smith of Cal State Long Beach, age 21, set a world indoor pole vault mark of 17 feet 11 inches at Sunkist after a 17-4 win at Philadelphia. Al Feuerbach improved the shot put world indoor record to 69 feet 4.5 inches. Tom Blair was runner up in vault. Kjell Isaksson placed third. In Munich, Prefontaine led in the two mile while Viren struggled. Rick Barry sprained an ankle and may miss the NBA All Star game.

Hayes reaches 10000 career points in win over 76ers

Elvin Hayes scored his 10000th and 10001st NBA points as the Baltimore Bullets beat the Philadelphia 76ers 108-97. Coach Gene Shue praised the milestone and team success, noting seven straight wins and first place. Other NBA results included Milwaukee over Golden State and Boston over Buffalo.

Williams and teammates dominate Sunkist high school meet

Lompoc High senior Williams won the two mile in 9:02.8, breaking the meet record by two seconds. Teammate Jim Schankel took second as Foothill’s Larry Gerich and Santa Monica’s Steve Beck posted 9:21.2 and 2:21.3 respectively. Alvin Gilmore won the 1,000 yard run in 2:17.4, with several top competitors near.

Crampton sweeps Phoenix Tucson back-to-back golf wins

Bruce Crampton captured back-to-back titles in Phoenix and Tucson, earning 30000 dollars with a 277 total at Tucson National. The Australian star led by six strokes despite a shaky finish, aided by five birdies and an eagle, as he heads toward the Crosby Pro Am in Pebble Beach.
