City Administrator Gene L. Wahlers said Lompoc citizens have responded in an outstanding manner to the beautification fund drive with several new donations contributing revenue for projects around the town.
United Press International reports St Louis teachers defied a court order to strike, closing 35 of 166 schools and delaying all high schools amid a walkout vote by the St Louis Teachers Association and St Louis Teachers Union. Philadelphia Chicago and Superior Wis also faced widespread disruption affecting about 950,000 students.
United States and Vietnamese negotiators in Paris push toward a cease fire with a signing possible within days. Kissinger and Le Duc Tho held key talks as Saigon and Washington signaled optimism for a settlement including withdrawal of U S troops and POW return within 60 days.

The two South Vietnamese battalions at first contact were outnumbered and mauled.
First District Supervisor Frank Frost proposes a 30 year bond to condemn and purchase open space across the county. He says some areas near growth limits need permanent protection and may require zoning rollbacks. Frost envisions state and federal matching funds and rent back to ranchers where feasible, with community review sought.
