Thousands flock to Washington for President Nixon s second inauguration as crowds pour in from around the country amid warm weather and heavy security. Protests promise peaceful demonstrations while laments over parking signs and no-parking zones mar the festivities.
School trustees will hear the first public discussion of a deep cutback plan due to declining enrollment. Superintendent Glen Wegner proposes not closing schools, but consolidating four elementaries under two principals, attrition of certain specialists, and reduced custodial services. A public packet was issued and Wegner briefed staff. final action likely deferred for further study.
United Press International reports South Vietnam foreign minister Tran Van Lam says the United States and South Vietnam are very close to a cease fire with the Communists. Four gunmen held nearly a dozen hostages in a Brooklyn sporting goods store for over four hours and fought a fierce gun battle with police. One officer was killed, two wounded, as police and a sniper team battled in rain with armored car support and a helicopter overhead.
