Trotters eye Lew Alcindor but avoid bidding war

Los Angeles fans heard from George Gillett of the Harlem Globetrotters that the team will not engage in a bidding war for UCLA star Lew Alcindor unless he shows interest. Gillett noted lessons from last year's Elvin Hayes negotiations and said talks with John Wooden would occur this week. UCLA coach Wooden cautioned against overconfidence after a 100-64 win over Houston.

Matador and Pico cagers win weekend league games

In Lompoc gym action Matador beat Douglas 71-58 on Friday night and Pico’s routed the Golden Greek 92-71 on Saturday afternoon. Angel Torres and Jim Deegan led with 26 points apiece for Pico’s and the Greek respectively while Jack Partin and Danny Farrell added 23 and 22 for Douglas and Matador.

OJ Simpson open to Bills if salary right

O J Simpson said he would happily play for Buffalo in the AFL if the salary is right but cautioned one player cannot lift a team from bottom to top. He spoke after receiving the Robert F Maxwell Club award and noted draft implications and negotiations.

Cal Poly sprinter ties 50 yard dash mark in tuneup

Ruben Smith of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo tied the world in door mark with 5.2 seconds in the 50 yard dash in Stockton California tuneup. He and teammate Manuel Maurie are set for the 60 yard dash at the Astrodome Relays in Houston. James Lowe will run the 60 yard hurdles.

Musial and Campanella Elected to Baseball Hall of Fame

Stan Musial of the St. Louis Cardinals and Roy Campanella of Brooklyn were named to baseballs Hall of Fame. Musial led with 93 percent of 340 Baseball Writers ballots, first year eligible, Campanella named on 270 ballots about 80 percent. Campanella, paralyzed from an auto accident, becomes the second Negro inductee after Jackie Robinson.

Cabrillo grapplers sweep Nordhoff wins and pins lead

Cabrillo jayvee and Fresh squads dominated Nordhoff with a 54-10 and 38-12 wins. Coastal Car Club Rally Sunday From Williams Market Lot

Monte Carlo Rally Opens With 167 Cars In 38th Test

The 167 cars arriving in Monaco begin a 25 hour non stop driving test on alpine roads for the 38th Monte Carlo Rally. Only 60 will advance after the grueling 1,483 kilometer route as crews patched holes from heavy rains. Officials warn many sections will be extremely difficult and dangerous.
