Working cabinet oath marks Nixon's early push

President Nixon swore in 11 cabinet heads in a quick morning ceremony to launch a working cabinet. Walter Hickel did not take part in the oath but joined later. Senate debate on his interior secretary nomination continued as Democratic leaders warned a vote could slip to Thursday.

Pueblo commander surrenders to avoid crew slaughter

Cmdr. Lloyd M. Bucher testified at the Navy Court of Inquiry that he surrendered the USS Pueblo without a fight after a North Korean subchaser shelled the vessel off Wonsan. He said crew burned classified material as smoke filled the central section and the ship retreated toward port while torpedo boats kept pace.

Ten drown fleeing storm in Los Padres canyon

Ten persons including six youths were swept from a rescue bulldozer when it stalled while crossing Sespe Creek in Los Padres National Forest. A sole survivor, Scott Eckersley, described how the group sheltered in a camper, then vanished as floodwaters rose. Authorities declared all presumed drowned.

Deputies arrest man and two youths for narcotics

A 23 year old Vandenberg Village man, Adelbert Castagnoli Jr., was jailed on marijuana sale charges after deputies seized about a lid of suspected marijuana in the Village shopping area. Two 16 year olds were taken into custody and turned over to juvenile authorities. The narcotic was reportedly bought with a $20 bill and traced to Santa Barbara.

Valley dries as new storm approaches

After 3.5 days of heavy rain in Lompoc Valley the area shows improvement with clouds still lingering and forecasts predicting more rain tomorrow. Totals include 3.50 inches in Lom poc, 5.21 inches in the southern hills, and near 10 inches at Lake Cachuma as water levels rise but subside from peak flows.
