Flu Epidemic Grows With 341 Deaths This Year

UPI reports the flu and pneumonia deaths rose to at least 341 since January as London's new flu strain spreads. NCDC notes aged and chronically ill most affected with outbreaks in 25 states and major metro areas. WHO cites Moscow and Leningrad daily cases resembling the London variant.

Oil spill cleaned from Oakland Estuary after vandalism

Coast Guardsmen and private crews removed thousands of gallons of waste oil from a San Francisco Bay arm after vandals opened a tank pigot. Booms blocked the estuary mouth while boats and floating nets scooped and spongeed up the slick. A Coast Guard captain called the spill major and tides limited spread.

Flood damage in San Luis Obispo tops 3 million dollars

Unofficial estimates indicate 800 to 1,000 homes flooded as Laguna Lake rose over its banks. 8.95 inches fell over three days ending Thursday night, with nearly half on the final day, as cleanup began.

Fifth Army tightens barracks to curb drug abuse

The Fifth Corps in Europe bans incense and locked doors in barracks and orders open curtains and regular checks for needle scars as part of a new drive against drugs and alcohol in GI living quarters. General Davison called for removal of the uniformed drug pushers and cited over 600 intoxication related casualties since 1971. A separate report notes December beef prices rose to about 1.14 per pound amid continued retail price pressures.

Witness recalls Watergate bugging arrest scene at D N C

Former FBI agent Alfred C. Baldwin III testified from a Howard Johnsons balcony as police moved in to seize a bugging operation at Democratic National Committee offices. He described shouting warnings over a walkie talkie and hearing a radio voice saying they had them.

Skylab launch delayed two weeks to May date

Skylab launch pushed back at least two weeks from April 30 to May as testing lags. The unmanned launch will precede the crewed flight by one day, with Charles Conrad Joseph Kerwin and Paul Weitz among the first to orbit.

Rojas Arrested on Heroin Charge in Lompoc Center

Police arrested Edward Rojas 21 of 1605 W Pine Ave on possessing heroin and held bail set for Monday while he awaits Superior Court action on a prior narcotics case. He was taken at Lompoc Shopping Center on a petty theft warrant with a small quantity of suspected heroin seized.
