Nixon’s loyalty, power, and the price of leadership
Smith Hempstone surveys Charles de Gaulle and Richard Nixon, comparing loyalty, distrust of elites, and the dangers of personalism in the White House. He notes Nixon’s ascent of loyalists, the centralizing reshuffle, and argues warmth and humanity are essential for a nation beyond mere competence.

Ancient park oak saved after major pruning at Stow Grove
The century old oak in Stow Grove County Park in Goleta Valley was saved from removal after heavy pruning and root treatment. Park Director Michael Pahos said the tree faced toppling due to weakened roots and oak root rot. Gravel around roots improves drainage and safeguards remaining structure while gravel supports limit access to upper limbs. A children’s fort nearby was fenced off during repairs. Fifty two courses await students in Allan Hancock College Continuing Education at Lompoc for the Spring term starting Feb. 5.
