Santa Barbara Board okays county clerk and recorder merger

The Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 to consolidate the county clerk and county recorder offices by year end. New chair Charles F. Catterlin opposed. Menzel and van Buskirk plan to run for the combined post, which may cut salaries and eliminate an assistant role. The ordinance takes effect in 30 days and could affect the June 4 primary election.

County seeks to fill 70 vacancies despite freeze

Santa Barbara County is set to fill 70 vacant positions across departments despite a board imposed freeze. Raymond D. Johnson supported 84 total fills since the freeze as a move to bolster fund surpluses and avoid tax hikes. One supervisor opposed strict adherence, warning of tax increases, as action defers 184 other vacancies to Johnson's mid year budget January 28.

A federal grand jury indicted John Meier and three others on conspiracy and tax evasion charges over mining claim sales to Howard Hughes’ company totaling more than $8 million. Supervisors Delay Dog Fee decision to January Twenty Eighth

County supervisors debated raising dog license fees from four to ten dollars with neutered dogs at five dollars and decided to defer policy decisions until January twenty eighth.
