Spacecraft Tracking at Vandenberg Station
Lt. Col. Alex A. Pestrichella notes there are about 50 actual spacecraft among hundreds of satellites. The Vandenberg SCF station, with 23 officers, 239 enlisted, and 40 contractors, tracks roughly 93,000 satellite orbits yearly and supports about 15 launches, base rehearsals, and countdowns. A 10 ton dish, the 46, can rotate rapidly to receive telemetry and send commands during passes lasting minutes to hours. The Vela Satellite, at over 70 000 miles altitude, transmits solar flare data to earth and relays it through Sunnyvale for command actions.
