Sneaky and Smart Green Beret Finally Home After Fifth Escape

UPI reports James Rowe, 30, from McAllen Texas, endured five years in a Mekong Delta jungle camp. Guard Dramas described by defector Phung Van Thuong show Rowe’s stubborn, uncooperative stance, multiple escape attempts, and brutal punishments including two months chained confinement. U.S. artillery and helicopter fire neared the camp as Rowe and others lay low awaiting rescue.

The Lompoc Fire Department will hold its annual Christmas tree bonfire Sunday at 7 p.m. on the east side of North H Street. The Lompoc Town Band will perform, and residents may bring trees to the site free of charge.

Laura Machado Obituary and Funeral Services Set

Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 11 a.m. in McPeek Family Chapel for Laura Machado who died yesterday at 65. She was born January 21, 1903 in Dunsmuir California and was a 11 year resident of Lompoc. Survived by husband Jack, two sons Everet and Ronald, siblings Roy Linton Edith Stanfield Bertha Hooper, a niece Helen Silva, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Interment will be in Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery.

Families of Pueblo crew return home after captivity

Families of the 184 USS Pueblo crew welcomed sons and husbands home on December 24 after 11 months in captivity in North Korea. By year end 55 stayed in a special El Cortez Hotel block as the Chamber of Commerce raised 45800 dollars for meals and lodging beyond a goal of 25000. The Navy set a Purple Hearts ceremony at Balboa Naval Hospital for January and 10 sailors wounded in the seizure will be honored along with the family of Seaman Hodges of Creswell Oregon. Purple Hearts will also be awarded to veterans recovering from Vietnam wounds. Debriefing interviews and medical care continued for Pueblo crewmen and a court of inquiry was expected at Coronado within about 10 days.
