Freed GIs Report Good Shape After Release

Three American soldiers freed by the Viet Cong on New Year’s Day are in good physical condition and will depart for home Friday, military officials said. The men, Spec. Thomas Jones, Pfc Donald Smith, and Spec. 4 James Brigham, were released in a jungle clearing 50 miles northwest of Saigon and are recovering at Long Binh Hospital. A Vietnamese broadcast urged GIs to stand up against the war.

Traffic death toll below estimates for New Year holiday

United Press International reports the New Year holiday traffic deaths are tracking below the National Safety Council’s low forecast. The council predicted 200 to 260 fatalities for the 30 hour period ending midnight Wednesday, while an early count shows at least 156 deaths by 5 am EST, far from a new single day record of 193 set in 1963.

Building permit drop in Lompoc totals 1968

City records show 1968 construction volume in Lompoc at 1,324,267 dollars, down 79,858 from 1967. The fiscal July–Dec period fell to 325,517 from 562,991, while December 1968 rose sharply to 73,912, with last month listings including one new house and several residential alterations.
