Allied ambushes halt Viet Cong threats near Saigon drives

Allied forces in the Mekong Delta and around Saigon conducted raids that killed dozens of Viet Cong. US infantry, navy patrol boats, and Cobra helicopters cornered and eliminated 22 Viet Cong 60 miles southwest of Saigon while another 46 were killed 40 miles north, as South Vietnamese troops struck guerrilla positions and seized weapons stores in the delta.

Violence erupts as Catholics and Protestants clash near Londonderry

Riot police faced a running melee as thousands of Catholic demonstrators and Protestant militants clashed on Londonderry outskirts. At least 15 men and 7 women injured in the first minutes, raising total injuries to 71. Students arrived battered, some by ambulance, as 2,000 supporters cheered the march.

Lompoc Boy in Critical Condition After Bicycle Collision

An 11 year old Lompoc resident, John P. LaPointe, was left in critical condition at Lompoc Hospital after a bicycle collided with a pickup truck. The youth suffered a chest injury and possible multiple injuries. tests to continue. The truck driver, George James Cottingham, 60, of Creston, Calif., was released after questioning. Preliminary reports place both vehicles eastbound on Walnut Avenue at H Street when the crash occurred.

Kennedy Wins Leadership Role as Powell Returns to House

The 91st Congress elected Sen. Edward M. Kennedy as Senate whip and Adam Clayton Powell to seated status with a binding punishment. Powell will have no seniority and a reduced $2,500 monthly salary paid in installments through 1970. Powell called the penalty racist, while Kennedy’s win signals liberal strength. Scott and Hruska also secured top party positions.
