UN Security Council condemns Israel raid on Beirut airport

United Nations Security Council unanimously condemned Israel for the Beirut airport commando raid and warned of further steps if repeated. It called for Lebanon to receive redress for the raid that destroyed 13 Lebanese airliners valued at 50 to 100 million dollars. Israel rejected the resolution as inapplicable. The council did not discuss the Athens airliner attack. A separate local note reports a New Year baby born at Vandenberg AFB Hospital to Capt. and Mrs. Michael E. Jarvis.

Israel raids draw protests across region in new confrontations

Three American Prisoners Freed by Viet Cong

Viet Cong agents released three American prisoners to five U.S. officers after a 42 minute negotiation at a battlefield clearing near Saigon. The prisoners, weak and pale in light blue prison garb, were helicoptered to Long Binh hospital in good condition along with Maj. James Rowe.

Mass San Quentin escape foiled by broken rope

San Quentin Prison foiled a mass escape when a rope broke during a wall climb by six inmates. Two inmates Browning 22 and Seberry 28 fell back into the yard. Browning and Seberry had minor injuries. A guard flushed out Robert Johns 24 from a warehouse doorway with three shots and three more convicts were found in a drainage ditch.
