Apollo 9 to rely on Western Test Range ships for tracking
Apollo 9 will use four instrumented ships of the Air Force Western Test Range to track two orbiting vehicles during separation of the command service module and the lunar module. Vanguard Redstone Mercury Huntsville stations in Atlantic and Pacific will relay real time telemetry and commands to Mission Control Houston and NASA Goddard, with ASORF managing operations and about 400 technicians aboard.
