Local woman calls for volunteers to rescue oil injured birds

Lompoc housewife Mrs. Richard Reed appeals for help from housewives teens or anyone to patrol Santa Barbara County beaches for oil polluted sea birds. Tragic drowning near Juncal Dam during flood

William Brooks, 54, caretaker at Juncal Dam on the upper Santa Ynez River, drowned after slipping crossing a flood-swollen stream as his wife Fay tried to help. Rain totals reach 76 inches this season with 11 inches on Tuesday. Brook's body was found by his son, David Brooks, and a repair party. the dam remained overflowing but deemed safe after state inspections.

Violent Iberian Quake Kills Six Across Regions

A major earthquake shook the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa, destroying walls and apartments. At least six people died in Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, with many others injured. In Morocco two deaths occurred in Sale and Rabat, while heart attacks in Spain and Portugal added to the toll.

A light earthquake felt over 60 miles in Palmdale California caused downed telephones and a few shattered windows with little damage. Deputy Charles Jensen at the sheriff's substation recalled the tremor as the strongest he ever felt and said residents ran from their homes.
