Lightning strike on Carpinteria oil platform lights up shoreline

A bolt hit Standard Oil Co of California's offshore platform Hilda about two miles off Carpinteria. The gas vent ignited, creating a towering orange flame visible along the coast. Firefighters smothered the blaze by 3 a.m. with chemicals. no injuries reported.

Oil leak at offshore platform worsens flow near Santa Barbara

The flow of crude oil from a near offshore drilling platform increased on Tuesday and appeared thicker and blacker than earlier seepage. Union Oil Co. spokesman said there is no estimate of the amount, but it is considerable. The initial spill dumped over 230000 gallons and coated 35 miles of beaches.
