Tip aided in kidnapers arrest in Atlanta case
Atlanta editor Reg Murphy was freed after a $700000 ransom paid by the newspaper. FBI arrested William A H Williams and Betty Ruth Williams in Lilburn as tips from a Miami taxidermist led to the identification of the suspects. The ransom was recovered intact and Murphy credited the tipster W Charles Buddy Becker for aiding investigators.

Knowland Dies of Self-inflicted Gunshot at River Retreat
William F Knowland publisher of the Oakland Tribune and former US senator died from a personal safety related gunshot wound. Autopsy found no foul play as the body was near the water on a Russian River dock. A 32 caliber automatic pistol was recovered underwater two feet from the body. He had been at a redwood summer home for the newspaper centennial celebrations. Knowland had been the youngest senator in 1945 and began his term after Gov. Earl Warren appointed him.
