Independent voters loom large in Santa Barbara Ventura races

In Santa Barbara and Ventura counties 10000 independents exist and more may be in Ventura. District Attorney Milner reports a 23 percent rise in drunk driving prosecutions to 2947 last year, making DWI the most common crime. Over five years prosecutions surged, with felonies up 1 percent and misdemeanors up 11 percent. Milner calls alcohol abuse the county’s top criminal issue. The March 5 13th District race centers on Watergate impact and independent voters. GOP figures fear independents shift could complicate Lagomarsino’s bid for the unexpired Teague term, while Democrats hope a strong turnout and independent votes swing the outcome.
