Lawmakers seek limit on surplus state funds

Three Republican lawmakers led by Assemblyman Floyd Wakefield propose a bill to cap surplus funds kept by the legislature at no more than the amount needed for state services. They argue at least 14 million dollars should be redirected from legislative reserves.

North Vietnam accuses Nixon of three lies in world message

In Paris the Hanoi government charged President Nixon with three outright lies about Indochina. Xuan Thuy said the United States is feverishly preparing attacks on North Vietnam and warned of grave setbacks for U.S. policy while citing troop movements and threats to China.

Forest Service blocks private land developments in Los Padres

U.S. Forest Service plans to oppose lot splits and subdivisions on private land within Los Padres National Forest until environmental impacts are assessed. Forest Supervisor William H. Hansen and Santa Barbara District Ranger Don Vaughan urge a tougher review, citing unsafe access at Painted Cave and the need to protect watersheds. A 500 word policy stresses delays on road and utility permits for private projects.

Santa Ynez Valley planners study whole area

Santa Ynez Valley Planning and Zoning Committee underway to restudy the entire valley area including Buellton Parkway and Buellton community centers. The update begins with the Santa Ynez Valley High School area east of Solvang as committee chair Frank Giorgi explained at the County Planning Commission.

Andersen's Vacationland wins conditional use permit

The County Planning Commission approved a $450,000 216 unit RV park near Buellton Parkway south of Highway 246 on a compromise plan. Developers must add sidewalk improvements along 900 feet to meet Highway 246, with county right of way deeded between pavement and the camp. Groundbreaking planned for June 1 to open for summer tourists.
