Communists Overrun S Vietnam Paratroop Base in Laos

Communist troops behind a tank shield captured Hill 31 in Laos, overwhelming a 200-man South Vietnamese defense post. Reports say Hill 30 nearby was attacked too as U.S. artillery bombarded the area. Saigon says hundreds of rebels were killed and several bases faced mortars and rockets amid ongoing Ho Chi Minh Trail operations.

Doctor says Calley mentally competent

Army psychiatrist Maj. Henry E. Edwards testified that Lt. William L. Calley was not mentally impaired and could form the intent to kill at My Lai. His testimony contradicted two defense psychiatrists who said combat stress left Calley unable to premeditate murder. Edwards noted Calley was free from mental disease on the mission morning.

Nixon warns Middle East danger dominates nuclear balance

President Nixon in a state of the world message to Congress and a radio address said the greatest danger of nuclear conflict lies in the Middle East as the Soviet Union seeks dominance. He urged peaceful settlement in Indochina, backed a Nixon Doctrine of limited involvement, and warned that the United States will defend its interests and allies when challenged.

Sheriff conducts first Lompoc substation inspection

Sheriff John W. Carpenter toured the Lompoc substation, pledged to build a community oriented force, and plans to base detectives in Lompoc. He discussed budget requests, staffing needs, and a 24 hour warrants service. Four candidates were interviewed for a position, with a selection to be made soon.

Meir In Tel Aviv Cabinet Deliberates on Sinai Reply

Premier Golda Meir met with her inner cabinet in Tel Aviv to approve Israel’s final draft responding to the latest Egyptian peace offer. Reports say Washington favored Jarring proposals urging withdrawal from Sinai and Sharm el Sheikh, while Egypt warned of force if Israel does not pull back.

Florida agents seize Cuban boats in territorial dispute

Florida state agents and the Coast Guard seized four Cuban fishing boats after a clash over fishing inside the U.S. 12 mile limit. Skippers of three smaller boats were arrested while the Lamda was escorted back to international waters. One captain allegedly rammed a boat and a crew member was injured.
