Red advances threaten Plain of Jars fight in Laos

Reports from Vientiane say North Vietnamese and Pathet Lao forces, about 16,000 strong, close on the government air field at Xieng Khouang as Laotian troops prepare a delaying action. U S fighter-bombers reportedly hit insurgent columns and ambushes as civilians were evacuated from the plain.

Regents to decide tuition decision today

Regents of the University of California were set to approve a tuition plan urged by Governor Reagan, raising fees for 106,000 students to 480 next fall and 660 in 1971, with non resident costs up to 1860 and graduate adds. Critics warned of legal challenges citing equal protection concerns while debates over funding and a new Third College at UC San Diego occurred.

Rincon Pier Fire Engulfs Ventura Oil Pier

A massive oil fed blaze engulfed 800 feet of Rincon pier linking offshore wells to shore. Twenty two wells burned as flames rose 500 feet, with more than 100 firefighters fighting for nearly three hours. One fireman injured, one oil worker trapped and rescued, winds and leaking oil hampering efforts.
