North Vietnamese seize Plain of Jars in key Lao battle

North Vietnamese forces captured the 25 mile long Plain of Jars near Luang Prabang after a two hour tank assault that overran Xieng Khouang air field. About 500 defenders were missing and up to 6,000 enemy troops reportedly pressed the base with U S air support rumored to strike the plain. The seizure threatens royal Lao authority and regional government outposts as B 52 bombers were reported to target the victors from Saigon.

Bombs Rock New York Police Station and Offices

Molotov bombs exploded before dawn at a Greenwich Village police station a Brooklyn Navy recruiting office and a judge's home in upper Manhattan where pretrial hearings for 13 Black Panthers accused of bombing conspiracy are under way. Police say incidents likely linked with minor damage and no injuries.

Ethics committee member calls for campaign contribution ban

Sacramento APs report shows Legislative Ethics Committee member Frank Lanterman urging a ban on campaign donations in non election years. He cites the $5,000 gift to Sen. Jack Schrade from the California Association of Thrift and Loan Companies as an embarrassment to a non reelection candidate. Schrade disputes a link between the donation and his votes and requests a full ethics probe. Senator George Deukmeijian and Assemblyman Harvey Johnson comment on the need for inquiry and accountability. A dentist and former GOP official from Carmichael also urges action.

Five Chicago defendants receive five year prison terms

Five men convicted of crossing state lines to incite riots at the 1968 Democratic National Convention receive five year prison terms and $5,000 fines. Judge Julius J. Hoffman orders up to $60,000 in court costs. contempt sentences run concurrently with the term. Abbie Hoffman denounces the ruling as the defendants face a maximum five year sentence.

Caldwell could take over county oil office in Santa Maria

Norman Caldwell, the county Public Works Director deemed a troubleshooter, may assume interim supervision of the vacant county petroleum engineer's office in Santa Maria until a successor to resigning David E. Bickmore is named. Applications for drilling permits are expected to pile up, with Union Oil already on file for an onshore north county area.

Swiss jetliner crash kills 47 on board in Switzerland

A Swiss Air Coronado jetliner crashed after takeoff from Zurich Kloten airport en route to Tel Aviv, killing all 38 passengers and nine crew. The pilot radioed fire seconds after departure. sabotage rumors arose amid regional Arab guerrilla attacks. Witnesses spoke of an explosion before the four engines failed and wreckage scattered near Warenlingen.

Regents OK UC tuition ending century old free education

The University of California regents voted 16 to 6 to impose an educational fee, breaking a century old tradition of free higher education. Gov. Reagan urged the move, with undergraduates paying 150 this autumn and 300 next year, and graduates 180 this fall and 360 next year.
