Reagan cites knife incident at San Francisco State College

Gov Ronald Reagan said a group of students at San Francisco State College used switchblade knives to force admission of minority students. He recalled the Dec 8 speech describing the dean of admissions being pressured to register 40 students. The college and state officials said investigations are under way and records were already disordered.

California Senate backs campus trespass bill amid ACLU clash

Pueblo officers testify lack of military conduct orders

Three Pueblo officers told a Navy court of inquiry that the ship left on a spy mission without clear guidance on prisoner behavior if captured. They described signing false confessions under torture, staged news conferences, and poor medical care, while noting precommission training on POW conduct was the only guidance they had.

Ammonia Train Crash Kills Eight Near Crete Nebraska

A freight train derailed into two tank cars releasing toxic ammonia in Crete Nebraska. Eight people died and 500 residents evacuated as fog and an inversion layer trapped fumes. Several others were injured and authorities worked evacuations and investigations. Notable victims include Doane College football player Ron Hatchett and his daughter Gloria Jean.
