Andrew McGrath says start details depend on staff and site acquisition proceeds as Cardinal McIntyre approves the program. About 150 church men participate as the drive continues through February.
Federal insistence blocks free transfer of the old Lompoc administration building. Superintendent Charles Lockwood met with W T Frazier in San Francisco and learned that federal regulations require the district to convert the structure into classrooms to receive the 20 acre property at no cost. Bakersfield police arrested two juveniles and one 20 year old after they stole government rifles from Bakersfield High School with plans to rob Lompoc banks and the police station. They surrendered the guns, which were recovered by divers.
Lompoc opts to keep its own leash provision while joining the county licensing program for unincorporated areas. Enforcement shifts to the Humane Society, which already handles county cases. Minor revisions extend dog holding to five days, up from two, with county licenses recognized.
Lawrence Huyck was elected the Lompoc director for Vaqueros de los Ranchos at a Monday night meeting, succeeding Earl Calvert. The annual ride is set for early May at Tract A ranch near Las Cruces, with the February 18 dinner dance scheduled at the Santa Maria Elks hall.

The Branch USDB drive closed with $2,923.87 raised by officers, enlisted personnel, and civilian workers, exceeding the $1,500 goal. The climax was a benefit show The DB Spectacular that netted over $130. The event featured local talent and a farce Monday's Ordeal directed by Chaplain William Killelea, with cooperation from the 2030 Club of Lompoc and Art Harmon.
Enlisted personnel moved into the new permanent barracks at Branch DB after final acceptance of a $900,000 Army Engineers project. Previously housed in frame barracks from Camp Cooke, the facility features two wings and a connecting mess hall and is expected to raise morale and cut operating costs.
The Lompoc Record earned its ninth straight CNPA award in Coronado, placing third for general excellence among California weekly papers. Torrance Herald and Van Nuys News took first and second. South Gate Press was fourth. Publisher Kenneth Adam was re elected to the CNPA board and named chair of the Freedom of Information committee. Other Central Coast honorees included the Santa Barbara News Press and the Arroyo Grande Herald Recorder.
Tuesday night the city council withdrew an order to show cause against Alfonso Scolari under the anti shacks law for a North H Street property. LeRoy Scolari asked for another inspection as renovation efforts stalled since the 1955 order to bring the structure up to code.
Lompoc elementary schools may shift to double sessions for second and third graders starting in September to address a classroom shortage. Special needs classes would continue with the plan, backed by a survey from school principals. Citizens School Election Committee urged action amid talks of a tax override and bond program. Dr. William Briscoe of UCLA outlined funding and space needs.
Regular patrols by Officer Roy Wells and other California Highway Patrolmen return to Lompoc Valley from Buellton. The move comes after appeals from the Chamber of Commerce Supervisor R. B. McClellan and others that the area was underserved.

Local employers face a spike in sick leaves as the Santa Ynez river season begins.
