Boy Scout Week in Lompoc starts Monday with district Court of Honor next Thursday night in Grange Hall. All district Scouts take part as the 46th anniversary is celebrated. A potluck precedes the Court of Honor. The four year program Onward for God and My Country is launched by adult leaders. Dr. Arthur A. Schuck describes the goal to strengthen programs for youth and prepare them as citizens of character and teamwork.
The valley received 1.84 inches of rain last week, raising the season total to 10.89 inches at Lompoe city weather station, with seven inches in parts of the county. Ranchers report excellent range conditions, revived springs, and abundant grass growth as warm days and frost-free mornings improved pasture. The week averaged 60 degrees high and 40 degrees low, per Tony Stanich.
Federal pressure forces use of the administration building for classrooms at the 20 acre Terrace property. The building fails current codes and would cost about 28000 to upgrade. School officials seek relief from John P. Gifford and have asked Rep. Teague and Senators Kuchel Knowland to intervene.
The fourth annual Old Mission Santa Ines carnival in Solvang will run Sunday noon to evening at the Veterans Memorial Building. Barbecued chicken dinner starts at noon, with burgers, milk shakes, and other foods, plus booths for games, crafts, and prizes. Proceeds go to the Old Mission restoration fund.
Nomination papers for Harold Thompson and C. D. McCabe seek re election to councilman and treasurer roles. Ray C. Jacobs and C. S. Laubly circulate for councilman and city clerk. Filing closes February 16 at noon. election set for April 10.
Lompoc school board approved reinstating bus routes on Mail Crossing and Campbell roads and extending service to the Romain and Cabral ranches on San Julian road. A bus turn around on the highway is needed before extension, aimed at easing hardship for children walking to the bus stop.
Harold A. Camp named successor to Richard Guengerich as instructor in Senior Problems and counselor at the high school. Camp holds a B A from Superior State Teachers College and a master degree from the University of Iowa. He taught in Superior Wisconsin schools 1927 to 1947 and served 4 1/2 years in the Army.
About 300 names were added to the voter list in Lompoc last week as the PTA and Citizens School Election Committee boosted turnout. PTA volunteers contacted non-registered parents urging registration before the Thursday deadline for the school bond and tax election.
A county wide free polio vaccine program funded by federal money will vaccinate about a quarter of the 16 000 local children aged 1 to 15 and pregnant women. Immunizations start February 9 for morning kindergarteners at 2 30 pm and 3 30 pm for afternoon classes, with first graders shot February 16 between 2 30 and 4 30 pm. A second dose follows a month later. Pregnant women should contact their physician for free vaccine. If supply allows, older children may be vaccinated after April 1.
Martin Riggs Fred Ruffner and Howard Sperber were elected to the Lompoc Valley Club board of directors at the annual meeting Thursday. Four hold-over members Ed Ingram Bill Schuyler Gilbert Martin and Robert Lilley Jr remain on the board. An election of officers will be held by the new board at a meeting next week.
G. C. Rockwell of the Lompoc police force yesterday assumed duties as enforcement officer in the Lompoc and Santa Ynez valleys for the county's new dog licensing ordinance. He will work under the County Humane Society and be on call in unincorporated areas until city ordinance revisions pass.
Lompoe Chamber of Commerce directors unanimously endorse three school funding measures in the upcoming bond and tax election. Votes back the 50-cent elementary over-ride tax, elementary school bonds, and high school gymnasium bonds. A citizens committee meeting with Dr. William Briscoe is planned for next Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. in the high school library to discuss growth and the building program.
The County Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors moved toward a county wide master zoning plan with seven geographic areas. Top priority areas are Mission Canyon Giorgio Valley and Santa Maria with Lompoc later. A Zoning Administrator will grant variances with adjoining owners consent and hardship. appeals go to the Planning Commission.
