Funeral services were held Monday afternoon for Elm er Albert Collar a native Lompoc resident who died Friday at the family home 1202 East Ocean avenue. Born in Lompoc March 21 1894 he was a valley farmer and WW I veteran. Survived by wife Belle Collar and brother J Nelson Collar the service at Starbuck chapel was led by Rev Bernard Brewster with interment in Evergreen cemetery. Pallbearers were Malcolm Williams D G Weaver Ray C Jacobs Lawrence Huyck Albert Hildebrand and John Jansson.
The City Planning Commission, after a report from its trees committee, denied three requests to remove trees in residential parkways. The panel found no damage and kept the trees. The committee expanded to add Emil Scolari along with Eric Petersen, John Stearn, and Francis Beattie.
First grade pupils in Lompoc schools will get free polio vaccine this afternoon from 2 30 to 4 30 in the County Health Department offices in the Veterans Memorial building. About 160 children are eligible to receive the vaccine following kindergarten rounds last week when about 145 were eligible and 43 appeared for vaccination.
Memorial services will be held in Santa Barbara this afternoon for Carroll H. Glidden a Lompoc native lost in a maritime accident off the Gav iota coast. Glidden was part of a marine exploration boat crew when a 28 foot launch capsized during an anchor tending mission. The other seaman was rescued, Glidden remains missing. He was 38, a 1935 Lompoc High School graduate and Navy veteran, survived by his wife Susan and his family in Lompoc.
Robert Lilley Jr. of the Citizens School Election Committee says a parochial school in Lompoc and a public school building program complement one another. The parochial school will begin with six classrooms and about 150 students, easing future public classroom shortages. Catholic families will still have many children in public schools. The two programs together aim to solve the community’s educational needs.
The Board of Supervisors calls on the Coast Guard to keep the Point Arguello Lifeboat Station active. A Santa Barbara hearing next Thursday will consider disestablishment or retention with Lompoc Chamber of Commerce backing the retention. The 14‑man unit, commissioned in 1936, operates around the clock at 115 miles of coastline between Santa Barbara and Morro Bay.
Junior Alpha club volunteers appeal to Lompoc residents for loan of colored slides depicting flower fields, the Flower Festival, La Purisima Mission, and valley scenes. Slides will illustrate lectures for women's clubs and groups. duplicates will be made and originals returned.
Santa Barbara County Farm Bureau votes to back a county wide sales tax with a county share of city collections. It argues farmers would pay more taxes without county aid, while the Board of Supervisors notes county revenue could reduce property taxes. Endorses a survey of local hauling rates.
Lompoc residents are warned that Camp Cooke firing ranges will be used by Reserve and National Guardsmen and military personnel on Saturdays throughout the summer. Drivers near Camp Cooke should watch postings and signs for restricted areas.
Three Santa Barbara County educators received Certificates of Achievement Thursday for aiding the USDB educational program. County Superintendent Hal Caywood, Hancock College’s William Houpt, and Santa Maria Superintendent A S Van Wyk were honored by Lt. Col. Fletcher Co. Forward of the Training and Industries Section for helping grant elementary, high school, and college diplomas to personnel at the military installation.
The American Legion post in Lompoc endorsed the newly activated Army Reserve unit and invited it as guest at the Post’s March barbecue. Temporary HQ for the infantry company is set at USDB with permanent quarters planned at Camp Cooke. An information center operates Thursday nights in the public library council chambers. The unit is commanded by Lt. Frank Sandell.
Police report two juveniles are connected to at least six petty thefts. Chief William Petersen says items such as power lawn mowers and a beach buggy were found at the youths' homes, with more cases possibly uncovered as the investigation continues.
The Lompoc school board faces a firm federal rejection of its plan to turn the Terrace race site into a school campus. John P. Gifford of the HEW says the district failed to meet requirements, noting the land is within city limits, utility served, and too valuable for agricultural use while existing buildings are unsuitable for storage. An election of County Board of Education members is scheduled for June 5 under recent state legislation. Each high school district in the county will elect one member, plus one member from the Santa Maria and Santa Barbara elementary districts. Previously, board members were appointed by the County Superintendent and mainly drawn from the education system.
