Lompoc City Council Approves Five Acre Park Purchase

The Lompoc City Council approved buying five acres on O Street north of La Canada Elementary School for a park site and endorsed another five acres pending Parks and Recreation Commission. An offer grew to 10 acres with the price per acre reduced from 2000 to 1700. The commission had approved the first five acres but not yet the extra five.

Malicious freezer incident and local court actions in Lompoc

In Mission Hills Robert Lind Yantis reported a freezer outage spoiled about 100 dollars worth of food during his trip. In Lompoc Justice Court Randy Butcher and Raymond McConathy pled guilty to misdemeanor burglary for the Medical Pharmacy break in on January 28, with narcotics and a TV stolen. Memorial fund in Anna Belle Devlin’s name established

Friends of Anna Belle Devlin who died in a traffic accident Monday set up a memorial fund. Contributions may be sent to Lloyd Crossman, principal of Los Berros School, where Mrs. Devlin taught third grade.

Carnival and Barbecue at Old Mission Santa Ines

The 18th annual Old Mission Santa Ines carnival and chicken barbecue will be held Sunday February 8 at noon at the Veterans Memorial Building in Solvang. Proceeds go to the mission restoration fund. Prizes include an 800 pound steer or 500 dollars in savings bonds. Hundreds attend for Santa Ynez Valley style barbecue and entertainment.

UC protest charges explained

Santa Barbara County will not be charged for time and transportation of officers from nearby counties who helped quell UC Santa Barbara campus demonstrations. Mutual aid agreements cover the cost by each agency, with Region 1 pledging help among four counties plus Los Angeles and Orange counties. More than 250 officers from involved agencies aided since Friday while Santa Barbara deputies worked 12 hour shifts.

Closing Stocks Report and Local Accident in Lompoc

The Lompoc Record reports closing stock quotations via Rohrbaugh and Co. A man named Fred Benjamin Witam, 15, of Bellflower, suffers a pellet gun wound in a Santa Barbara hospital after a rifle discharged in Mission Hills. The incident happened yesterday at 3 p.m. behind Mission Hills Community Center when Edwin Richard Harer, 16, of Via Feliz, accidentally discharged the rifle after tripping on a hill. Witam was treated at Lompoc Hospital then transferred to St. Francis Hospital in Santa Barbara.

Military race problem acknowledged by Laird orders action

Defense Secretary Melvin R. Laird admitted a race problem exists in the armed services and ordered steps to correct it. He called for an interservice task force on education and race relations to develop a forcewide educational program and urged each service to review its communications.
