Santa Maria officials back offshore oil drilling ties
Santa Maria planning commissioner Bruce McGray and AFL CIO ally Donald Greeson urged county supervisors to reinstate County Petroleum Engineer David Bickmore as offshore oil operations face suspension. They linked labor and business support for continued drilling while noting Bickmore’s past financial matter with Union Oil. The board warned the Bickmore probe is not complete as McGray disclosed his nonoil contracting business.

Explosion levelled Shaker Heights police building
An explosion that destroyed the Shaker Heights municipal building may have been caused by a bomb carried into the site by a 13 or 14 year old boy. The blast damaged the 11 year old police station jail and court complex injuring 16 people. Police suspect a bomb though gas is unlikely as the meter remained active. A youth was seen entering with a wooden box moments before the blast and may still be trapped.
