Carter aides draw fire as Cabinet picks favor old boys network
Women’s groups criticize Jimmy Carter’s early Cabinet selections as biased toward an elite network. The UPI report notes strong city concern over Patricia Harris’s housing post while Ray Marshall gains AFL-CIO praise, and others condemn late consultation with interest groups amid reshuffling. Gloria Steinem and Barbara Mikulski say they cannot secure hearings as insiders fill top posts.

Gangs blamed for deadly Los Angeles apartment fire
Street gangs may have sparked a Monday night fire that killed six people and two unborn children and injured 30 in a crowded 50 year old two story building in Los Angeles. Fire officials tied the blaze to recent gang warfare and a nearby shooting sequence that began with Abel Garcia being shot and ongoing violence before the fire. The fire started on the first floor and blocked upstairs exits in a 20 unit building housing many Mexican and Mexican American residents.
