California pickup fee hike sparks state protests
Hundreds of pickup and van owners bombard DMV offices over a 1974 license fee increase. The new law adds $15 for pickups under 3,000 pounds, boosting revenue by about $4.5 million and ending eligibility for passenger car rates if used commercially. The change also raises fees on heavier commercial vehicles, including Larry Lowell’s 11,500-pound van.

Nixon Impeachment Inquiry Gets Four Month Lead Aide
A Republican named to head a four month impeachment inquiry against President Nixon was selected by House Judiciary Committee Chair Peter W. Rodino Jr. Although Rodino withheld the name Doar, 52, former head of the Justice Department civil rights division, is a likely choice. Doar led civil rights efforts in the 1960s under Democratic presidents. Also Kissinger and Le Duc Tho met in Paris to salvage the cease fire of 1973 amid ongoing fighting. In Sacramento veteran Assemblyman Edwin L. Zberg faced a five day jail term for drunken driving under state law. And in Madrid Luis Carrero Blanco was killed by a bomb near the U S Embassy, with Vice President Torcuato Fernandez Miranda taking over as prime minister.
