Illness takes life of Ralph Bunche

Dr. Ralph J. Bunche former U N undersecretary general for political affairs and Nobel laureate died at New York Hospital after a long illness He was 67 Bunche who helped found the United Nations and won the 1950 Peace Prize retired from the U N in October He survived by his widow Ruth Ethel Harris a daughter Joan and a son Ralph Jr born August 7 1904 in Detroit He faced racial slights yet his career included mediating Israel Arab armistice agreements and co authoring An American Dilemma with Gunnar Myrdal

Final action for corridor designation by county planners

The County Planning Commission approved a Scenic Corridor designation for an 18.5 mile stretch of State Highway 1 between Las Cruces and Lompoc city as part of amendments to the General Plan. Authorities report the loss of a tin six part candle mold for eight inch candles from the candle making room at La Purisima Mission. The mold, numbered 513-1, was torn from the table sometime late Friday or early Saturday.

Drainage committee action on flood control and Miguelito Channel

The drainage committee noted a forthcoming report on revising the flood control ordinance and a flood zone fee. Tax Collector J. Newton Blanchard warns taxpayers not to withhold property taxes to force a lower rate. Delinquents face 6 percent penalty plus 1 percent per month. first installment due in person by Dec 10 and postmarked mail by Dec 10. second installment due April 10 with same penalties.

Plan Reapportion Criticized by Assemblyman Stull

Assemblyman John Stull told about 50 local Republicans at the public library that the Democrat-oriented reapportion plan is a travesty and must be overturned. He urged reconsideration at a Dec 17 meeting and warned of court action if no modifications are made. Stull chairs the Republican assembly caucus and tied his remarks to next year's elections. Assemblyman Don MacGillivray, representing the 36th District including Lompoc, noted Stull’s elevation to Republican leadership and urged campaign volunteers as he warned of defeat without help.
